The World’s Biggest Hora

This coming Sunday at the Garden State Jewish Festival, in Lakewood, NJ, organizers hope to break the Guiness record for the world’s Largest Circle Dance (aka hora). “The previous record is for 6748 people in the U.K. 1995. We hope to draw up to 7000 people to break the record.” (c/o EphShap)

Being gay in Jerusalem

“My first kiss was in front of a haredi event hall in the middle of Jerusalem. We stood there, he and I, in a slightly dark spot in the center of town. From the adjacent windows came the happy sounds of the event the haredim were celebrating – a wedding, bar mitzva.

“At the end of the street a group of border police passed looking for people who want to blow themselves up. And me, I was standing there with him, ‘provoking,’ ‘parading my perversions down the street,’ doing the thing that ‘most residents of Jerusalem find disgusting,’ that ‘the three religions see as a sin’ – kissing the person I love.”

A Letter from the Secret International Jewish Conspiracy, LLP

“Many of you have spoken to me about being troubled by having our international conspiracy exposed by the recent remarks of the outgoing Prime Minister of Malaysia, Mahathir Mohamad. Let me remind you that it was our brilliant strategy to give him the soapbox (in English, no less) at the Islamic Conference in Kuala Lumpur (which we, of course, also control) so that world democratic leaders under our control would condemn his comments. This would therefore convince people that his statements were false, and deflect attention from Iraq’s democratization, so that we could go back to our business of running the world without undue attention.”

Mhmm… In the meantime, The Asia Times, uh, interestingly corroborates Mahathir’s claim of Jewish world domination.

NYPD Attorneys Claim Hasidic Witnesses Plotted in Synagogue

“Brooklyn Assemblyman Dov Hikind attacked Mayor Bloomberg yesterday for allowing city lawyers to suggest that Hasidic residents who witnessed the 1999 police shooting of Gidone Busch met in synagogues to coordinate their testimony.”

Damn, that’s a foul accusation.

What a gas!

“A Holocaust memorial in Berlin to Europe’s 6 million murdered Jews was at the centre of huge embarrassment last night after it emerged that one of its German construction firms had supplied Zyklon B used in Nazi gas chambers.”

Confusadox

Indiana’s “Messianic” Congregation Avodat Yisrael is a Presbyterian Church complete with baptism, communion, and Jesus — but also Torah, menorah, and Yom Kippur, which supposedly was established to target “Christian-Jewish” couples and secular Jews. The AJC’s William Granick responds.

A Fond Welcome

Just so it doesn’t slip under the radar, I’d like to welcome EphShap, aka The Town Crier, as well as John Brown, editor/publisher of News From Babylon, to the Jewschool blogteam. They are a welcome addition to the site whom I believe bring some rather interesting stuff to the table. Welcome, and thanks, to both of you.

Oynk: Kosher Bomb Sniffing Hogs

Former Chief Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu and Kiryat Arba’s Chief Rabbi Dov Lior both offered Rabbinic endorsements to test wild pigs for use in bomb detection in Israel. The pig, which is considered impure according to Jewish law, make for excellent sniffers. One kibbutz in Israel is already producing bomb sniffing-pigs. The initial question was posed to the Rabbis by the Gedud HaIvri, a volunteer group in Israel that deploys canines and dog handlers to help sniff out Arab terrorists. A spokesman from the Gedud HaIvri told IDF Radio that pigs might be used for bomb detection if they prove to be more effective than dogs. (c/o Voice Of Judea)

With Friends Like These

“Instead of internalizing the fact that interest groups are an inseparable part of the democratic game, Muslim leaders invent anti-Semitic conspiracy theories about Israel and American Jews. It is easier to let racist genies out of the bottle than to admit that more than a billion Muslims worldwide do not do a fraction for their Palestinian brethren of what six million American Jews do for Israel.”

Mmm… Well, Palestinians are willing to fight and die for Palestine. How many Jews are willing to do that?

Best Idea I’ve Heard In A While

“Here’s one of the ideas currently being batted around, with utter seriousness, by the political and military decision-makers: The countries of the European Union, in coordination with Egypt, will convince Yasser Arafat to leave the region and to let his successor, whoever that may be, run the affairs of the Palestinian people. Europe and Egypt will vouch for Arafat’s welfare, while also ensuring that he refrains from active involvement in what happens in the territories.”

Australian Jews Reject Palestinian Prize Winner

The Australian Jewish community is protesting the selection of Dr. Hanan Ashrawi, a prominent Palestinian activist and politician, as recipient of the Sydney Peace Prize, and are complicating many a political career in the process. As a senior PLO official, and Yassir Arafat’s former spokesperson, Ms. Ashrawi has been denounced as an advocate of terror.

The community’s voice, however, is not unanimous. Ian Cohen, the only Jewish MP in Australian parliament, is upholding the award committee’s decision.

Carved Memories

A new book and exhibit by David Goberman aims to preserve the memory of Russian-Jewry with photographs of Jewish headstones from Russian cemeteries.

Reb Zalman Retires from Naropa

Wearing a black beret covering shimmering silver hair and sitting on a wooden stool, Schachter-Shalomi shared his “spiritual hobby” of translating T’hillim, or psalms.

“In Judaism, psalms are the ‘surefire method’ of reaching God,” he said, illustrating with a story: “When Jerusalem was under siege, a little old lady walked the streets, telling everyone not to pray for a religious miracle, but to rigorously recite psalms.

“The point was that you don’t leave God alone, you bug him about it,” the rebbe said with a full-bearded grin.

Lubavitcher chosid and founder of Jewish Renewal, Reb Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, catches up with the Boulder Daily Camera, and announces that he is stepping down from his post as World Wisdom chair at Naropa University in order to pursue the monumental task of archiving his life’s work.

Brit Tzedek v’Shalom and the place in history of American Jews

In today’s Boston Globe, Stephen P. Cohen writes of the need for “a new US movement for Middle East peace.” Cohen is president of the Institute for Middle East Peace and Development and national scholar for the Israel Policy Forum. In the article, Mr. Cohen mentions the upcoming Brit Tzedek conference being held in Boston October 31st-November 2nd, and says it may prove to be a test of whether the American Jewish peace movement can change the course of history by becoming a powerful force in the middle east conflict.

“What we’re saying today is that you’re either part of the solution or you’re part of the problem.” –Eldridge Cleaver, Speech in San Francisco, 1968

Claims Conference Wins Court Ruling + Christie’s Cover Up

“General claims submitted by [The Jewish Claims Conference] seeking to regain property taken by the Nazis in what became East Germany are valid if they can be supported by official documents, a court ruled Thursday.”

In related news, Christie’s auction house tried to sell a painting looted by Nazis from its Jewish owners. The company denies any wrongdoing.

A Strange Experiment

Israel Shamir, a “Russian-Israeli intellectual” and journalist, writes on the “Nazification of Israeli society,” for Arab News.

Apparently, in response to the controversy surrounding IAF refuseniks, Maariv ran an op-ed condemning the pilots and supporting Israel’s military actions. The op-ed was later discovered to be wholly composed of lines written and spoken by Adolf Hitler.

The article attracted very little attention, for it was an exact match to the rest of the write-up produced by Messrs Dankner and Barnea. Only a few days later, a sharp-eyed retiree paid notice to the by-line: The article in question was signed A. Schickelgruber, a real-life name of Adolf Hitler, and every single sentence was taken from Hitler’s speeches and books. This new posthumous career of the Nazi leader as a Zionist columnist served a sterling proof of advanced Nazification of Israeli society. The Zionist sympathizers affect their indignation whenever their black deeds are compared with those of Nazis, but publication of Hitler’s article and following lack of response by the Israeli public staged a convincing experiment: The Israeli discourse fully inverted and appropriated the Nazi propaganda.

While Shamir himself may be a questionable source, this is pretty fucked up right here, no?

Poland Seeks Auschwitz Survivor for Genocide

“Poland is seeking the extradition from Israel of an 83-year-old Polish-born Jew on charges of genocide for the deaths of German prisoners in a communist camp he commanded after World War II.”
