The revelations about his past only came out about a decade later, when he was running for political office in Austria. Also, documentation came out "proving" that he had not committed any war crimes, and nobody had smoking-gun type evidence against him, so even though most people still think he probably has mucho blood on his hands - and he probably does - it can't really be proven on paper conclusively, as far as I've read. When the UN hired him, it was not public knowledge that he had a nazi past - he had been lying and covering it up. The revelations about his past only came out about a decade later, when he was running for political office in Austria.

Also, documentation came out “proving” that he had not committed any war crimes, and nobody had smoking-gun type evidence against him, so even though most people still think he probably has mucho blood on his hands - and he probably does - it can’t really be proven on paper conclusively, as far as I’ve read.
