American Nazis “adopt” an Oregon road. County officials allowed it to avoid a First Amendment lawsuit. I was just wondering when asphalt grew vocal chords.

Dispatch From Auschwitz:
Then world leaders took the floor. The shortest and coldest speech was made by the US Vice President Dick Cheney. The most emotional speech was delivered by Israel Singer, the President of the World Jewish Congress.

The Washington Post reports on the 60th anniversary ceremony of the liberation of Auschwitz. The ceremony was outdoors, so those in attendance, such as French President Jacques Chirac and Russian President Vladimir Putin, were wearing dark, formal overcoats and dress shoes or boots. Because it was cold and snowing, they were also wearing gentlemen’s hats. In short, they were dressed for the inclement weather as well as the sobriety and dignity of the event. But there was one exception…
Cheney stood out in a sea of black-coated world leaders because he was wearing an olive drab parka with a fur-trimmed hood. It is embroidered with his name. It reminded one of the way in which children’s clothes are inscribed with their names before they are sent away to camp. And indeed, the vice president looked like an awkward boy amid the well-dressed adults.Like other attendees, the vice president was wearing a hat. But it was not a fedora or a Stetson or a fur hat or any kind of hat that one might wear to a memorial service as the representative of one’s country. Instead, it was a knit ski cap, embroidered with the words “Staff 2001.” It was the kind of hat a conventioneer might find in a goodie bag.
It is also worth mentioning that Cheney was wearing hiking boots — thick, brown, lace-up ones. Did he think he was going to have to hike the 44 miles from Krakow — where he had made remarks earlier in the day — to Auschwitz?

I go away for three days and all hell breaks loose. Jeebus. I see you’ve all met my sister, Holy Terror. After listening to so many people bitch about not having a diverse enough array of opinion on the site, I figured, hey, why not add a hareidi Kachnik metalhead to the mix? Only drawback is she’s a bit new to the blogging thing, so forgive her missteps — I’ve cleaned up the mess. Anywho, that ought to spice things up a bit. And she’s now been schooled on proper etiquette and protocol, so, don’t stress the addition. As for now, Shabbat shalom. We’re having a little DNS trouble so if the site goes out over the weekend, don’t worry, it’ll be back as soon as the new settings propagate.

The main metal site in Israel is Metalist, which is run by Oron Tanami and his sidekick Ofir Messer. They have the most news about the Israeli and international metal scene posted, other than Hyde Park.
Currently one of the hottest topics on Metalist is one of the first and most loved Israeli bands to make it big internationally: Orphaned Land.
They’re on a mini-European tour right now, but right before they left they had a sending-off-show in Tel Aviv-Jaffa.
Click here to see the pics I took, wheeeeee.

Talk about concessions… Does the world know about this?
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is poised to pardon two PA officials with proven ties to terrorism, including one of the planners of the fatal November 2000 bombing of an Israeli school bus.
Does the world comprehend the lengths of “goodwill?” Would something like this ever be tolerated in the US?

Ukranian-American activist Myron B. Kuropas was a member of the delegation sent by President Bush to the Ukrainian presidential inauguration last week. Mr. Kuropas has accused Jews of manipulating the Holocaust for their own gain and blamed them for Soviet-era atrocities in Ukraine. He has written that ‘Big money drives the Holocaust industry’. When questioned with this information, a White House official said “We were not aware of his previous statements. Had we been aware of such comments beforehand, we would not have invited Dr. Kuropas to be a member of the delegation.” The White House did not disclose who recommended Kuropas for the delegation.
Where are Foxman and Weiss on this one? This all shouldn’t really bother the broader Jewish community because it is not nearly as deplorable as such heinous crimes like Hillary embracing Suha…

Arutz Sheva reports,
Last Thursday, the civilian head of Hebron’s security apparatus, Yoni Bleichbard, who is employed by the Defense Ministry, received a phone call from an officer in the Hebron brigade. She notified Yoni that his weapon’s license, permitting him to carry an M-16 rifle, had been voided and that he was now classified as “weapons-negated”. The reason: unknown. The source of the decision: somewhere up there – Central Command or higher. The result: yesterday, Yoni was forced to ‘return’ his rifle to the authorities that be. In other words, Hebron’s security chief is forbidden to carry the primary tool of his trade, that tool which is used to offer protection and defense, should the need arise, to any of the Hebron community’s hundreds of residents or thousands of visitors.

Betzefer, an Israeli band, sprouting from the churning earth of the Holy Land, is about to take the world by storm…
Stemming from the actually quite impressive Israeli underground metal scene, Betzefer takes the meat and bones from all its varied influences and throws it into a chulent that satisfies the urge for some good fuckin’ rock and roll (the name of one of their songs, actually).

Shabak favorite David HaIvri gives a history of Jewish civil war.
A civil war is one of the biggest nightmares of the Jewish people, but it is not something unheard of.
HaIvri, incidentally, is the founder of Revava, a grassroots organization that has created a very interesting boardgame. Fun for the whole family.

An Israeli company has discovered a link between altruism and genetics. An “altruistic gene” if you will.
Why are some people more prone to give charity or put themselves in danger in order to help others? A team of Israeli psychologists claim they have the answer – they’ve located the first gene linked to altruistic behavior. According to a study conducted by Prof. Richard Ebstein and colleagues at the Hebrew University and Herzog Memorial Hospital in Jerusalem, a link exists between people who appear selfless and seek to help others, and a gene variant on chromosome No. 11.
Does this mean that altruism can be engineered?

Hollywood darling Natalie Portman recieved a nomination for Best Supporting Actress becoming the first Israeli born actress to be nominated for an Academy Award. Other Jewish nominees include Michael Leigh for his direction of Vera Drake and screenwriter Charlie Kaufman for that Jim Carrey flick which everyone tells me is worth seeing.
Personally, I think Portman deserved a nomination for her role as Marty in the underrated Beautiful Girls.
Looks like “Hollywood” screwed Mel Gibson. And by “Hollywood” I mean…
