At the end of the school year in the States, people come crashing down from finals and caffiene, maybe go out to celebrate a bit with friends, pack up their stuff and head out for the summer. It’s mildly eventful, but the major partying is usually saved for the mid-semester Spring Weekend.
Here in Israel, the end of the year is the time for the gigantic gala bashes with some of the country’s bigger bands playing and stuff. The one at Haifa U. is on June 2 and features Hadag Nachash, HaYehudim and Aviv Gefen, among others. The one for Hebrew U in J’lem is on May 23-24, and features (among others) Segol 59, Shalom Hanoch, HaYehudim (again) and that guy with the “Mi Ohev Otach Yoter Mimeni” song, aka The Song That Makes You Really Glad He’s Not Your Ex (So You Don’t Have To Worry About Getting a Restraining Order.) He and Dilate-era Ani DiFranco should duet, I think.
There are other parties all over the country, and non-students can, for most of them, buy a reasonably-priced ticket at the door. Keep your ears open, or check out this (sadly, only in Hebrew) info site here.

This should be an interesting trip (c/o Dan Rosen):
If you’re coming to Israel on birthright, or if you’ve been to Israel before but feel that you were perhaps left with a one-sided view of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, or that you did not learn as much about the present situation as much as you’d have liked, you may want to consider attending one of these programs this summer:
Bina Kehilla:
The Bina Kehilla trip will be a genuinely eye-opening experience for its participants by allowing them to witness first hand what is happening in the region. The delegation will visit communities in Palestine and Israel, border checkpoints, Jewish settlements, and major landmarks with tours of these areas by local community leaders, members of Palestinian and Israeli peace and justice organizations, and student/youth community leaders. We will be immersing ourselves in Israeli and Palestine culture by staying in hotels and in communities impacted by the ongoing problems of the region.
One questions – is this free as birthright is?

Well if you find yourself answering yes to the above questions then a new Israel reality television show wants you!
The program’s producers are looking for a bachelor between the ages of 24-38, and are interested in finding someone who is handsome, educated and financially secure – that is, the dream of every Israeli mother.
In the framework of their efforts, the producers even elicited the assistance of Jewish organization in the hopes of finding the perfect man for the job.

The New York Times reports that Kinky Friedman, the original Texas Jewboy, will kick off the gubernatorial campaign season at this weekend’s Houston Art Car Parade. He’s concentrating on collecting enough signatures to get on the ballot against incumbent Gov. Rick Perry, asking voters to take the Lone Star Pledge – not voting in either primary, but saving themselves for the indie Kinky campaign.
Why an art car parade? According to his campaign, “He just likes the darn cars.”

JTA reports:
“WASHINGTON, May 10 (JTA) — Steve Rosen, recently terminated as the American Israel Public Affairs Committee’s policy director in the wake of an FBI investigation, expects to be indicted as soon as June, according to sources who know the case.
[...]
Rosen has told contacts that he is convinced the government is still looking for “Mr. X†or “Agent X†— an alleged Israeli master spy in the United States. Jewish communal officials have said they believe the FBI has been seeking a “Mr. X†since the Jonathan Pollard spy scandal in the 1980s.”

Ezra Weinberg (a Jerusalem-based Reconstructionist rabbinical student and former urbutznik) delivers a firsthand account of the first ever national Ultimate frisbee competition to be held in Israel:
The Holylanders made what would be their final pull as the third hour of this epic final game began. I let the disc drop and made the first pass to Michael or Josh. Maybe it was Hillel. I couldn’t really see. But I did see a Holylander with a ponytail hit the ground. He got up and started limping. It was clearly a darkness related fall. And then, it was as if a collective decision had been made at that moment by all the Holylanders and Lions, by all the other teams watching, by all the spouses and friends bundled up on the darkened sidelines. This game was over. The Lions and Holylanders would end the first Israel Ultimate Championship in an 11-11 tie. It was a win-win decision. People started clapping in approval (and in relief) of the decision to end. Holylanders and Lions hugged each other. I was almost in tears. The Tel Aviv Holylanders and the Jerusalem Lions of Zion – the first ever co-champions of Ultimate Frisbee in Israel. How perfect. Symbolic of this unity was a group human pyramid made up by players on both teams. Ultimate was indeed born and blessed in Israel on this day, and consecrated in an exhilarating final game.

The Jerusalem Open House (JOH) board met last week (May 4) to discuss whether or not it’d be a wise move to hold this summer’s expected international gay pride festival, WorldPride, during the time of the disengagement from Gaza. The group issued the following statement:
The Jerusalem Open House is fully committed to the holding of the WorldPride 2005 events in Jerusalem. However, in view of the potential timing of the Gaza pullout, we want to openly state that we feel that holding WorldPride exactly on the dates that coincide with the pullout would be highly inappropriate and would do a disservice to the values WorldPride is about: tolerance, pluralism, and equality.
Since at this point in time there is yet no concrete information regarding the precise timing of the disengagement, the JOH will continue monitoring this evolving situation and will decide accordingly – as soon as new, factual information is made available – together with our many friends and supporters around the world and in Israel. We advise those making their travel plans for this summer to take these considerations into account – and we look forward to a meaningful, successful WorldPride in Jerusalem.
Stay tuned for the final word from JOH.
