From today’s NY Times Op Ed Page
Jack’s House
By Hart Seely
These are the men
That fleeced the tribes
That paid the money
That made the bribes
That purchased the Congress that
Jack built.
It goes on at great length, like its inspiration, from there. Read the whole thing in today’s Times if you have a TimesSelect account and let me know if you can do the final stanza in one breath, kay?

The bomber blew himself up at the entrance to the settlement of Kedumim, killing himself and 4 Israeli civillians (including a teenager). The terrorist disguised himself as a Hasidic Jewish hitchiker and was graciously picked up by a car full of Jews being nice. Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades has taken credit for the attack. Full Story

You forgot Germany. It seems that Poland would like to officially change the U.N. world heritage directory listing for Auschwitz so that people understand it was run by the Nazis from Germany and not by Poland, its geographical host.
The government requested that UNESCO, the U.N.’s educational and cultural body, change the name from “Auschwitz Concentration Camp” to “Former Nazi German Concentration Camp Auschwitz-Birkenau,” Culture Ministry spokesman Jan Kasprzyk said.
Polish officials have complained in the past that foreign media sometimes refer to Auschwitz — a death camp located in occupied Poland where Nazi Germans killed 1.5 million people during World War II — as a “Polish concentration camp.”
That phrasing deeply offends sensitivities in Poland, which was subjected to a brutal occupation by Adolf Hitler’s Nazi forces.”

Central Florida’s Local 6 reports,
Several parents in Apopka, Fla., are upset over a surprise school “Holocaust” project that some say tormented children, according to a Local 6 News report.
Local 6 News reported that eighth-graders with last names beginning with L through Z at Apopka Memorial Middle School were given yellow five-pointed stars for Holocaust Remembrance Day. Other students were privileged, the report said.
Father John Tinnelly said his son was forced to stand in the back of the classroom and not allowed to sit because he was wearing the yellow star.
“He was forced to go to the back of the lunch line four times by an administrator,” Tinnelly said.
Tinnelly said the experiment upset his child.
“He was crying,” Tinnelly said. “I said, ‘What are you crying about?’ He said, ‘Daddy, I was a Jew today.’”

… except, of course, that this time, it was the one selected by the democratic process in which the US government invested international goodwill, thousands of lives, limbs, and billions of dollars. And Iraqi Premier Jaafari is not feeling it. From the Judy Miller, Wiretap burying, Sudan advertising Times:
“There was a stand from both the American government and President Bush to promote a democratic policy and protect its interests,” he said, sipping from a cup of boiled water mixed with saffron. “But now there’s concern among the Iraqi people that the democratic process is being threatened.”
“The source of this is that some American figures have made statements that interfere with the results of the democratic process,” he added. “These reservations began when the biggest bloc in Parliament chose its candidate for prime minister.”
—
Now, admittedly, it seems like Jaafari is having some issues, and he may not be the best guy in the world. But how can we argue around this one? This is from the election the administration paraded around as a success!!! Is the Administration going to keep demanding folks step down so a former oil exec can run the country?

Just noting the Abramoff hat change for all you fashion watchers. Shot immediately after today’s sentencing by the New York Times.

Jack Abramoff is going to prison!
And this is only the beginning. This sentence is for the fraud charges related to the 2000 purchase of the SunCruz Casinos fleet. It doesn’t even scratch the surface of the federal corruption charges.

It’s stories like this that may build pressure internally for an expansion of Haredi units in the Army.
Infantry soldiers in an ultra-Orthodox unit of the Israel Defense Forces’ Nahal Brigade foiled a suicide bombing attempt Wednesday, seizing a Palestinian wearing an explosive belt at a checkpoint east of Nablus.

- Kadima 28
- Labor 20
- Shas 13
- Yisrael Beiteinu 12
- [sic]Â Likud 11
- Ichud Leumi / NRP 9
- Gil 7
- United Torah Judaism 6
- Meretz 4
- United Arab List 4
- Balad 3
- Hadash 3
And that’s it. The other 19 parties don’t make it.
A few hours ago, I was hoping for a Kadima-Labor-Meretz-Gil coalition without Shas, but at this point those four parties only add up to 59 seats, so unless there are adjustments tomorrow, Shas in the government is inevitable. Too bad. But I can still enjoy seeing Bibi Netanyahu fade into irrelevance and Uzi Landau (#14 on the Likud list) lose his Knesset seat.

It is, perhaps, a lesson to all of us about the tragic nature of the human condition itself that the Great Men of Israel are frequently denied fulfillment of their respective legacies. Moshe did not make it to the Land of Israel. Kind David did not witness the completion of the Temple. And Ariel Sharon will not lead the disengagement out of much of the West Bank.Â
But the Jews frequently take the visions of their greatest leaders to heart, and complete them on their own.Â
Before his terrible series of strokes, Sharon outlined the blueprint for a bold new strategy. Of course a partnership is preferred. It is greatly preferred.Â
But it is not mandatory for action.Â
It seems important that the largest amount of votes for this Third Way came out of the pockets of the right-wing Likud, even more than the left. At the very least, many on the right did not feel comfortable voting for a platform their leader had rejected.Â
The Israeli people have spoken. We must support their decision.Â

The polls are closed in Israel, and exit polls are in. So far it appears to be the lowest turnout in history, slightly under 2003.Â
The biggest surprises so far:
- The Likud is getting its ass kicked. All the pre-election polls predicted that Likud would come in third, but it might even come in fourth (behind Kadima, Labor, and Yisrael Beiteinu).
- Gil (the Pensioners’ Party) appears not only to have made it into the Knesset, but to have won 6-8 seats.
