Today: Only 373 days until Pesach!
106. “On the eighth day you shall observe a sacred occasion.” (Leviticus 23:36) = Shemini Atzeret
107. “You shall not work at your occupations.” (Leviticus 23:36) = Shemini Atzeret
108. “You shall not eat anything leavened with [the pesach sacrifice].” (Deuteronomy 16:3) = don’t eat chametz on the afternoon of Erev Pesach (the time when the pesach lamb would be roasting)
109. “On the first day you shall remove leaven from your houses.” (Exodus 12:15) = clear out your chametz before Pesach
110. “No leavened bread shall be eaten.” (Exodus 13:3) = during Pesach
111. “You shall eat nothing leavened.” (Exodus 12:20) = during Pesach, don’t eat anything containing chametz (not just chametz on its own)
112. “No leavened bread shall be found with you.” (Exodus 13:7) = during Pesach, don’t have it in your possession
113. “No leaven shall be found in your houses for seven days.” (Exodus 12:19)
114. “In the first month, on the fourteenth of the month at evening, you shall eat unleavened bread.” (Exodus 12:18) = eat matzah on the first night of Pesach

116. “On the seventh month, on the first day of the month, … you shall observe it as a day when the horn is sounded.” (Numbers 29:1) = hear the shofar on Rosh Hashanah
117. “You shall live in booths seven days; all citizens in Israel shall live in booths.” (Leviticus 23:42) = Sukkot
118. “On the first day you shall take the fruit of hadar trees, branches of palm trees, boughs of leafy trees, and willows of the brook, and you shall rejoice before Adonai your God seven days.” (Leviticus 23:40) = Sukkot

  1. where’d shavuot go?
    I haven’t been keeping up with the mitzvot, but seeing the titles is helpful for keeping me on track with counting

  2. The prohibitions of work for all the other holidays (besides Shemini Atzeret) were in last night’s list. Shavuot doesn’t have any other non-Temple mitzvot of its own, and the Temple mitzvot will come later (in Sefer Avodah).

  3. I love that we have more than one “new year,” but it’s interesting that no one greets each other “in the first month” with “l’shana tovah.” Why not celebrate twice? Why not continue to wish each other a good year?
