“Thank you for being a friend,” Estelle Getty dies at 84

Born to immigrant parents as Estelle Scher, the famed actress who made her name as the ornery Sophia on “The Golden Girls,” for which she received an Emmy in 1988, has passed away at the age of 84.  Ms. Getty suffered from advanced dementia.

Like many Jewish stage personalities of her generation, she got her start in the yiddish theater. Below is a not-funny video tribute, complete with sad Jewish violin music, and all.

Thank you, Ms. Getty, for all the years of laughs. May her memory be for a blessing, and may her mourners be comforted.

  1. That’s not just any sad Jewish violin music — that’s the theme from Schindler’s List.

"I may attack a certain point of view which I consider false, but I will never attack a person who preaches it. I have always a high regard for the individual who is honest and moral, even when I am not in agreement with him. Such a relation is in accord with the concept of kavod habriyot, for beloved is man for he is created in the image of God." —Rav Joseph Soloveitchik
