Holocaust on your plate?
“Holding up grisly posters that juxtaposed images of Holocaust victims next to animals in slaughterhouses, animal rights activists demonstrated Tuesday in front of the Museum of Tolerance.
“While only 10 protesters attended the demonstration, which was staged by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), the group’s latest ‘Holocaust on Your Plate’ campaign comparing genocide to food manufacturing has caused most people to wonder: Have the activists gone too far this time?”
Comparing people to animals, said Rabbi Abraham Cooper, associate dean of the museum’s Simon Wiesenthal Center, “is an obscene parallel.”
i agree…thats why i think it goes too far….but it is obviouse that those in PETA make no distinction.
It is an obscene parallel. I honestly think that if people were becoming cannibalistic, PETA wouldn’t give a rip.
So why make a comparision between chickens and humans?
Perhaps comparing people to animals is obscene, but don’t you think that the laws in Torah about slaughtering and eating animals are at least partially based on the idea of being humage towards animals?
And if that’s the case, shouldn’t we be evaluating the role of ‘modern’, i.e. factory- farming methods, and how they relate to kashrut?
you are absolutl rgiht.. Tzar Baalei Chayim or the prohibition of casuing pain to animals is very clearly dictated in the torah… it does not negate the kashrut of he animal however unless there was proof post slaughtering that physical damage was done to animal…
Well, thanks for the reply, even if it is somewhat disappointing — given that no one in ancient times could possibly foresee what animal husbandry has come to, I would hope that tzaar baalei chayim would be directly applicable to kashrut.
Still, while I can see people getting annoyed with this, the parallel is not that offbase. Obviously, it’s more serious to treat people in this manner, but clearly the PETA poster is trying to get to answer the question ‘how much cruelty towards animals is justified for food?’.
And, furthermore, if it annoyed you, it made you think about it, in a way that another image might not have.

Has anybody come across this event at the Museum of Tolerance? What are they hunger striking about?
