More People of the Comic Book

“Julius Schwartz, one of the architects of the fantasy world of comic books and science fiction, died Sunday at Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola from complications from pneumonia. […] Schwartz, who was born in the Bronx and lived in Queens Village, was a widely admired editor at DC Comics for more than 40 years.”

Also on the subject of DC Comics, Jews, and, well, death, check out Judd Winnick’s new 12-issue comic book series Caper, which explores the history of the Jewish mafia in San Francisco, from the early 1900s to the modern era. The series follows the story of the Weiss family, a clan of Jewish mafiosos, through three generations, leaving a long trail of blood behind them.

Winnick, who’s best known for his work on The Green Lantern, says of Caper, “It’s a great gangster story. It’s a story of redemption. And it’s a real mix of fact and fiction. A lot of characters in the book are based on people from true life, who lived in San Francisco in 1906, and some of it is a total, absolute fabrication.”

The comic launched in October and is currently on it’s fifth issue. Intended for mature audiences, Winnick assures us it’s “one of the dirtiest things DC’s ever put out.” You can find back issues (as well as current ones) at your local comic retailer.
