  1. Unfortunately, with all the rhetoric flying such as that offered by Eggleton, it’s no wonder Jewish students get all riled up when confronting criticism of Israel on campus. It’s a little bit more complicated, and the history goes quite a bit deeper. Have you ever been to York University, mo?

  2. “Israeli soldiers bearing the phrase “Born To Kill” on the backs of their uniforms, taunting and beating Palestinians — a thoroughly inappropriate and unfair, though sadly accurate, portrayal of the scene’s real-life counterpart.”
That’s crap man, if it wasn’t for those freaking checkpoints every other 10 year old would be blowing people in Israel… And if I was there, I would have definitely smashed some of those terrorist-lovin’ faces.

  3. And if I was there, I would have definitely smashed some of those terrorist-lovin’ faces. That’s your problem — lucky thing you weren’t there.
The more relevant question imho is how the portrayal can be both inappropriate and unfair and sadly accurate; I think what mo was trying to say was that the portrayal was inappropriate and unrepresentative, though sadly reflective of a small number of incidents. (Unless, of course, he’s arguing that most people at checkpoints tend to get beat up. But I don’t think that’s what he’s arguing.)
Similarly, when he writes that Art Eggleton called “Hatred of Israel […] the new and clever guise of anti-Jewish prejudice,” (…) [but] criticism of Israeli governmental policy itself is not anti-Semitism, it sounds like mo is saying that propagating hatred of Israel is a way of criticizing Israeli government policy.
I don’t think he mean to say that. It just came out that way. That’s what drafts are for.

At last Thursday’s rally, Canadian MP Art Eggleton called “Hatred of Israel […] the new and clever guise of anti-Jewish prejudice,” perpetuating the very mistaken ideology that’s at the core of this incident. Although anti-Semites may at times use the cover of anti-Zionism to attain their own ends, criticism of Israeli governmental policy itself is not anti-Semitism, regardless of what Abe Foxman, Alan Dershowitz and Phyllis Chesler would like us to believe.

At last Thursday’s emotionally charged rally, Canadian MP Art Eggleton called “Hatred of Israel […] the new and clever guise of anti-Jewish prejudice,” tugging at his audience and efectually perpetuating the very mistaken ideology that’s at the core of this incident: that criticism of Israel is defacto hatred of Israel, and thus in turn, anti-Semitism. True as it may be that some anti-Semites use the cover of anti-Zionism to advance their agendas, criticism of Israeli governmental policy itself is not anti-Semitism. The influence of anti-Semitism on the Left is naught but overstated, as the number of Jews in the movement surely outnumbers that of anti-Semites.
    unless ben changes something.

  5. I have only one comment to make. I think the line “Worse yet, with anit-semtic crimes being at record levels in Canada (themselves acts of poorly channeled anger on the part of Muslim youth angered by Israeli policy and Jewish complaence” is an over simplified statement. It sounds like blaming the victim for the crime commited, and while victim is not the right word here, I think that it is important that not all anti-semitic crimes are commited because of Israeli policy or Jewish complaence. Sometimes they are commited due to hate. I think it’s important not to be too sweeping in our statements, or we become the very things we are criticizing.

  6. Ah, witness the disintegration of democracy in our time. Slowly, but effectively, such mentalities (on both sides of the conflict) destroy an otherwise fine tradition of democratic debate. Bye-bye republic. Hello tyranny.
And this is why we need to teach or children, starting at a very early age, the now lost art of debate.
These are the modern barbarians, both sides.
And they’ll get us all killed — just wait.
