New Film Explores Rocker’s Black-Jewish Roots

[Lenny] Kravitz’s cinematic debut, “Barbecues and Bar Mitzvahs,” will be a dramatic comedy the artist compares to the films of Woody Allen. “It’s not a music movie, which is cool,” Kravitz said. “There are no concert scenes or anything. It’s about someone in my particular position growing up between two cultures. It’s like ‘Annie Hall’ or ‘Manhattan.’ ”The son of a Jewish TV producer and black actress Roxie Roker (who played Helen Willis in the TV series “The Jeffersons”), Kravitz searched for identity as a child and found solace in music, which he felt embraced all ethnicities. His movie, due in 2005, will address this discovery.
Oy, I’m shaking my head already… Expect the worst. Hope for the best.
An interesting confluence of a real news story and comedy, I think.
On Chappelle’s Show, comedian Dave Chappelle did a sketch in which they had an “Ethnic Draft”, in which different nationalities jockeyed for possession of celebrities with mixed ethnic heritage: the Jews chose Lenny Kravitz.
Nice that he compares himself to Woody Allen. Now that’s chutzpah…I guess he’s authentically Jewish after all.
Lenny Kravitz used to go to this shwarma joint on the Rue des Rosiers in Paris with his then girlfriend Vanessa Paradis (now the wife of Johnny Depp). I saw him there once and he seemed cool, even agreeing to pose for a couple of photos for the owner – said photos I believe still on display at the shwarma place. So while I hear tell that he’s a real dog to the ladies, wtf, I’ll see the movie ….
Also worthy of note, his new album is called “Baptism.” Baptism, bar mitzvahs, barbecues…maybe his career is currently being sponsored by the letter B.
I think the movie is worth a try to see. You never know a persons talents until you see them revealed. He already is an amazing rock artist, and he has formed a record label, so he is obviously a multi-tasked oriented kind of guy.
