Kazakhis Distance Selves From Borat

The New Yorker magazine has an interesting piece by Daniel Radosh about Sacha Baron Cohen’s popular recurring Borat bit from his exceedingly popular program ‘Da Ali G Show‘ and how it has prompted Roman Vassilenko, the press secretary for the Embassy of Kazakhstan to make a public statement regarding the character and Cohen’s characterization of Kazakhstan.

“It was partly Borat’s casual but relentless anti-Semitism that led Vassilenko to object publicly, in a letter to The Hill, a Washington weekly.”

  1. That was a good piece. I kind of feel bad for the Kazakhs. I mean, I doubt their country is a beacon of hope in the region, but at least the Russians launch space craft from there. Seems like Borat is doing more harm to the Kazakhs then he is to da Joos.

  2. I don’t think anyone takes that guy seriously. I, for one, don’t know anything about Kazakhstan, but knew right away that there was nothing about this Borat character that resembled any real person.
