Franti Drops In For Doc

Spearhead’s Michael Franti paid a brief visit to Israel last week to continue work on his documentary I Know I’m Not Alone. The film, which premiered as a work-in-progress at last month’s Slamdance Film Festival, “takes viewers on a musical journey through war, life and occupation in Iraq, Israel, Jordan and Palestinian occupied territories. Along the way [Franti] shares his music with families, doctors, musicians, soldiers and everyday people who in turn reveal to him the often overlooked human cost of war. Told in their own words, this film provides a rare glimpse into the lives of those who are affected the most by war. Michael’s storytelling and songs masterfully weave the film into a visual and musical tribute to the resilience of the human spirit.”

Among those Franti met with during his visit was Jerusalem rapper Sagol 59, who will appear in the film as an interview subject, discussing Israeli music and its relationship to the “matzav.” The two are pictured here, noshing ice cream in Tel Aviv. (Photo c/o A. Student, 972 Records)

  1. I was really excited when I read about this flick a while back. Franti is fantastic. Not only is his music inspiring, but when I saw him this summer while abroad in the UK he blew my mind away. I encourage you all to grab some of his stuff!

  2. i saw franti and spearhead in concert in new york a while back…he doesn’t seem to be doing anything particularly new, either musically or politically – he’s sort of married hip hop and flower power – but as Nas gripes in his new album, concious hip hop is now as trendy as its ever going to be…
can we show the film in jerusalem?

  3. I don’t know much about him or his project, but something inside of me tells me, I will be cringing upon viewing the product…
