  1. It’s a good thing you didn’t hit send and Judd Harris’ friend, David, doesn’t read JewSchool. That would be awful. He must have confused JewSchool with the Yada blog.
fuck American Idol. It’s the apex of pop-culture, advertising and market research all twisted into a self-reproducing, self-gratifying blowjob. Guaranteed to sell you what you’ve been sold before and guaranteed to never use a new idea.

  2. “It’s the apex of pop-culture, advertising and market research all twisted into a self-reproducing, self-gratifying blowjob.”
Kinda like 99.9% of Hip Hop and all that Urban shit. Worse, when the whities jumped on the band waggon, it was/is so obvious they’re trying to shed their mid to upper middle class upbringing it’s embrassing.

  3. shtreimel,
actually, AI is worse because they built-in their own market research to the equation, having the public vote for stuff before it’s sold.

  4. Oh don’t get me wrong, AI is horrible, horrible stuff. Actually, I run a small recording studio/record label, and for a while I’d describe our work with youth as: “Whatever American Idol is, we’re the opposite”.

  5. Careful, Mo,
David Levy is a friend of a friend (of yours) and a friend of mine as well. You should have known someone on the site would know him.
Moreover, you and I both know that more American Jews have seen American Idol than have seen every artist you’ve promoted on your site put together. That’s not to say the show isn’t a pile of vapid horse manure (I wouldn’t know, I’ve never watched American Idol). Nor is that the point. David feels a sense of solidarity with his fellow Jews, which he is expressing through popular culture. You, on the other hand, pride yourself on being counter-cultural, which is why you wrote the email. What is interesting is that you wanted to share the email not with David, with whom you don’t (from your impression) share values, but with those on Jewschool, with whom you do share values. You care just as much about your Jewish identity, but express it through counter-culture rather than pop culture. But you’re two sides of the same coin.

  6. Why do you think I don’t read Jewschool? Of course I read the site, that’s why I sent the damn e-mail. I guess the “2 Jews/3 Opinions” motto only goes towards 3 opinions that you can agree with.
A little about me. I’ve been a full time Jewish educator for three years. Before that I was full time in independent music, running a tiny label devoted to a niche market. However, I also know that big doesn’t always equal evil, nor does popular equal bad. I’m proud of my friend for making it this far in a mainstream way, and I don’t see how that in any way takes away from his credibility as an artist, a Jew, or a person. I also know that in a year when the overwhelming majority of the finalists are going out of their way to push their Christianity (something like 17 out of the 24 said they’d thank God first if they won, and believe me, they’re not talking about saying HaTov uMeitiv), I think it wouldn’t kill the rest of us to remember that we’re a part of America too – even the crass, commerical America represented by American Idol.
(And if commerical or mass succes doesn’t matter at all, why do we care if Matisyahu got signed by a new label, or that the label isn’t “what you’d call major label status”…? Just askin’.

  7. CK —
    I’m glad you asked!
Since Israeli public television is running episodes once a week (and not twice, like I assume they’re doing again this season in the States) I actually had no idea who was in the finals. That being said, I now know both Judd Harris and Anthony Fedorov have made it (but that’s purely from my sister’s AIM profile in which she gave their voting numbers).
I trust my sister’s opinion. She’s 13 and very savvy.
Y’allz just need a good dose of HATERADE
(PS — I just checked the contestants page, and it seems there’s also a girl, “Mikalah,” who has made the final 24. While she ain’t no Swedish princess, I do appreciate the name…)
(PPS — My spamblock word is “jewlicious.” hehe…)

  8. I like the chick with the big hair and the obnoxious sixteen year old from Vegas. I think the “rockers” are totally lame. There is nothing “rock and roll” about American Idol. Nothing. My sixty year old banjo strumming Dad rocks harder than any of those fuckers. But I do have to say I would vote for the Jew because I support Jews in sports and I always look for Jewish names in movie credits, so not supporting Judd Harris would be contrary to my beliefs.

  9. Why do you think I don’t read Jewschool? Of course I read the site, that’s why I sent the damn e-mail. I guess the “2 Jews/3 Opinions” motto only goes towards 3 opinions that you can agree with.
oh lighten up man. i was totally just fucking around.

  10. If Mikaleh Gordon is not the epitome of the Jewish American Princess–in the perjorative sense, since she annoys the shit outta me–then no one is. But whether or not she’s actually Jewish remains to be seen.
Federov is Jewish too? (His real first name is Anatoly, not Anthony.) *shrug* He”ll get a lot of the Clay Aiken fanclub vote. He should do well.
Judd Harris also looks like he will go far among the guys on the show. Upbeat, and good showmanship, but probably not as good a singer as Federov.
And of course, Paula Abdul is Syrian-Canadian Jewish.
