Where chocolate, toffees, nut brittle and other sticky confections were once created and sold, the sweet sounds of Jewish prayers will soon be heard – once again. The Jewish community of this frosty Siberian port city Vladivostok recently celebrated the return of a synagogue that had been wrenched from Jewish occupancy by the Bolsheviks some 80 years ago.
[…] The return of the Vladivostok synagogue is part of a trend seen across the former Soviet Union. Since the fall of the Soviet Union, and the demise of its official atheist stance, over 4,000 confiscated religious buildings have been returned, mostly to the Russian Orthodox Church, according to a State Department report international religious freedom.
