Yeshiva University Commentator: Jewschool Kicks Ass

In an article ripping into YU’s new glossy culture ‘zine, The Spectrum, Mordechai Shinefield of The Commentator writes,

If the magazine exists for its own sake without a sense of purpose, it will merely become one of the many outlets whose gap it intends to fill. Between Jewschool, HEEB, Mimaamakim, Nextbook, The Forward, Kol, and the very newspaper you are reading right now, there is not an obvious dearth for new Jewish culture publications.

Damn, we’re in good company. And apparently ahead of the pack… 😉

  1. I’d put Mimaamakim and the Forward first, but then I’d be accused of bias. 😛 You know you’re always at the top of ‘my’ list Jewschool.

  2. Wow, YU students praising former YU students regarding publications relevant to no one outside the YU world (and, of course, those of us who enjoy to point and laugh). Very impressive indeed!

  3. One of many self-congratulatory posts; the latest in a string of comments attacking anyone who dares question it — it’s getting a bit old, no?
As it happens, the post is wrong. Yeshiva University Commentator: Jewschool Kicks Ass? Well, the article does indeed say that between Jewschool, HEEB, Mimaamakim, Nextbook, The Forward, Kol, and the very newspaper you are reading right now, there is not an obvious dearth for new Jewish culture publications.
But that’s right after it complains that quickly it could degenerate into a magazine like HEEB. Jewish culture without substance: Knishes instead of serious discussion, half jokes and bad puns. While a glossy cover is impressive, so are challenges of excellence leveled against both the student body and administration. I am told that “culture without substance” and “kicks ass” are, well, different things.

  4. chas v’chalilah we should be proud of what we do and share the props we get — especially in light of the fact that we get paid in props, not cash.
and jewschool and heeb are hardly the same thing. jewschool’s a galaxy in which heeb’s a planet. it’s not the center of our universe.

  5. how silly that people love to dis mobius. its like going to someones house just to tell them that you don’t respect them as much as they do. why pray tell are you in the house to offer such rude comments in the first place.

  6. Erm, relax: it’s not diss-ing, it’s “read before crow”-mongering. As in, if you’re going to put up a big ol’ post crowing about the company some think you’re in, you may as well ensure that those people think that it’s company worth being in.
Or, to put it another way, before shouting far and wide about props, best straighten out whether they’re giving you props.
why pray tell are you in the house to offer such rude comments in the first place. What’s rude? I’m criticizing. Why do you think criticism is illegitimate?
    jewschool’s a galaxy in which heeb’s a planet. Now, moving right along…
