Louisiana, they're trying to wash us away

A few days after Hurricane Katrina, the President was on ABC news claiming “I don’t think anybody anticipated the breach of the levees.”
Which is funny, because according to this video obtained by the Associated Press, that’s exactly what he was told before the hurricane hit. The full story and video, fed to the Washington Post by the AP:
In dramatic and sometimes agonizing terms, federal disaster officials warned President Bush and his homeland security chief before Hurricane Katrina struck that the storm could breach levees, put lives at risk in New Orleans’ Superdome and overwhelm rescuers, according to confidential video footage.
Bush didn’t ask a single question during the final briefing before Katrina struck on Aug. 29, but he assured soon-to-be-battered state officials: “We are fully prepared.”
Wow. You can find my extendo commentary on this on the Riot Act.

  1. And here’s the rebuttal:

It would be nice if the postings on Jewschool made some attempt to address, or even identify, counterarguments. But that would be an exercise in truth-finding. Apparently, shallow propaganda is more fun.
And here’s a general question. Some on the Left blame Bush for September 11. However, if on September 12, 2001, you’d been asked to give odds that no major terrorist attack would occur on American soil for the next four and one half years, you’d have given very slim odds. Yet here we are in March 2006. So I ask, whose “fault” is that?

  2. While the federal government is not blameless, the major failure falls on the New Orleans and Louisiana govt. Also, the problems with the levees were known for decades, so the reality is Clinton is just as much at fault (and Reagan and Bush I and, I think, Carter) as Bush II.
