I LOVE that he was married to a Jewish woman! That ALMOST makes him a self-hating Jew. Rather than an anti/philo-Semite.
I had a similar encounter. I was wearing my kippah on the metro, and somebody came up to me and asked me if I was Jewish. When I answered in the affirmative, he went on to tell me how much he admired Jews because we were “fighting for our county (meaning Israel)”. When I told him I didnt think we should be fighting for it, that we could share it, he looked a bit confused. He then went on to extoll Jewish control of the media and our financial acumen, noting how Jewish fokls took care of the own, which was commendable in his eyes, and that if his community was crafty, smart, and looked out for themselves, they would be better off. I tried to tell him that Jews did not control banking and the media, that there were poor Jews, and that most Jews do not actually do their philanthropic work inside the Jewish community. I didn’t call him out on his anti-semitism, but I wish I had some way to point it out.

I think you actually did a pretty good job of calling him out, in a way. You weren’t confrontational about it, but it sounds like you at least let him know that not every Jew wholeheartedly embraces the stereotype he envisions.
Either that, or you made him think that in addition to being crafty and clannish, and controlling the media, we also like to argue with the goyim 🙂

I’ll never forgot my boss making my co-asst. cry for sending Arendt’s EICHMAN IN ISRAEL mistakingly instead of the new, NYX Book Review of a recent book on Arendet and Heidegger’s love affair. I swear in Hollywood, all the stereotypes are real and worse than they’re reported. This Jewish asshole was so self-hating (with the blond trophy wife, having phone sex with publicists [he’d close the office dr, but my co-asst. was jumped on the line].
Anyway, way, Mr. Burnham, you need to repent this Passover as well, but thanks for the crazy memories, “You sent Eichman in Israel to Warren Beatty, you did what?!!!” (we’d send books as gifts to his clients or potential clients that he never read, but saw in the book review).

Israel, Jerusalem….those jews and accuracy. Not like he cared about accuracy.
And the book I’m referring to was prob. “Hannah Arendt/Martin Heidegger” (Yale University Press) by Elzbieta Ettinger. That came out arond the right time. I read Heidegger and Arednt in college, so it was bizarre to have my ahole, self-hating, Jewish, agent boss refer to them.
