(Introduction.)
Today: idolatry is still bad.
31. “Don’t make gods of silver or gods of gold with me.” (Exodus 20:20)
32. “The names of other gods … should not be heard on your lips.” (Exodus 23:13)
33. “Burn the city…” (Deuteronomy 13:17) = the city whose population has become idolatrous
34. “…it shall not be rebuilt again.” (Deuteronomy 13:17)
35. “Let nothing that has been doomed stick to your hand.” (Deuteronomy 13:18) = don’t use anything from the aforementioned city
36. “Such evil things will not be done in your midst.” (Deuteronomy 13:12) = don’t entice people into idolatry
37. “Don’t assent to him/her…” (Deuteronomy 13:9) = the one enticing people into idolatry
38. “…and don’t listen to him/her…” (Deuteronomy 13:9)
39. “…show no pity on him/her…” (Deuteronomy 13:9)
40. “…and have no compassion on him/her…” (Deuteronomy 13:9) = don’t testify to his/her innocence
41. “…and don’t cover up the matter.” (Deuteronomy 13:9) = don’t be prevented from testifying to his/her guilt
42. “The prophet who … speaks in the name of other gods shall die” (Deuteronomy 18:20)
43. “Don’t listen to the words of that prophet.” (Deuteronomy 13:4) = a prophet encouraging idolatry
44. “The prophet who presumes to speak in my name that which I did not command … shall die.” (Deuteronomy 18:20)

  1. The omer counter on the right, from MyJewishLearning, is showing the wrong count and is LEADING PEOPLE ASTRAY. Someone please fix it! Thanks.
Also, good timing (for real this time): #32 is in the Torah reading for tomorrow morning (the 4th day of Pesach).

  2. Jewschool – you are borring the hell out of me – I used to visit you every day – but you have become so self obsessed and self referencital that it’s almost impossible to read you – without having some insider information about what the hell you are talking about. (usually lots of Jewish sounding made up groups or organisations that i’ve never heard of or give a monkeys about)
so it’s over! i want my CD’s back! I just don’t love you anymore! I’m just board! This just isn’t going anywhere –
I’m tired of not being listend to – I tired of all this talk about nothing – talking forever about Israel, The Holocaust, Leftwing polotics usually about Israel or the Holocaust or Antisemitism – or your half baked take on Judaism – were I am a Kofer (Heretic) just makes me dispare that this place just isn’t and wasn’t ever for me –

  3. 39. “…show no pity on him/her…” (Deuteronomy 13:9)
    40. “…and have no compassion on him/her…” (Deuteronomy 13:9) = don’t testify to his/her innocence
Here I have some trouble. I understand and can justify the point of not listening to those idolaters but having no pity. Nah. I don’t dig and will show pity for these people.
Blah blah blah we are all idolaters of something. Yadah Yadah slaves to our jobs blah blah. So I feel we need to show some pity here to help those get over the hump of being distracted by other gods.

  4. 43. “Don’t listen to the words of that prophet.” (Deuteronomy 13:4)
Meaning Max above, apparently. I like the content, I don’t think it’s all self-referential, and I don’t live in Jerusalem, or on the Upper West Side. So there.
    40. “…and have no compassion on him/her…” (Deuteronomy 13:9)
    And he can’t spell, either.
