Want a full-time creative job at a magazine straight out of college?
Two positions in are opening up at New Voices, the country’s only independent, national magazine written by and for Jewish college students.
New Voices is published by the Jewish Student Press Service (est. 1971), and publishes articles about Jewish community issues, politics, and cultural affairs. The editor’s position is a two-year commitment and the publisher/director’s is from 2-3 years. Applicants for both positions should be only 1 – 2 years out of college.
This is a chance to run a non-profit organization and publish and edit a nationally distributed magazine read by more than 27,000 Jewish students on over 500 campuses. These positions are excellent opportunities for anyone interested in journalism, writing, publishing, non-profit management, and building a progressive Jewish community. Past New Voices staff members have been accepted to the country’s best journalism schools and have gone on to write for such publications as the New York Times, Newsweek, Dissent, National Public Radio, the Jerusalem Report, and the Forward.
These are full-time positions with health benefits in New York City. Our offices are in Chelsea.

1. Editor
   • All aspects of editing the magazine, including planning issues, soliciting articles, editing, and proofreading
   • Managing a student editorial board of student editors and writers from various campuses
   • Working with the designer and printer
   • Collaborating with the publisher on administrative and development tasks
2. Publisher/Director
• Development – grant management, grantwriting, contact with and solicitation of donors
• Publishing – ad sales, management of distribution and circulation, overseeing subscription programs
• Administrative tasks – bill paying, maintaining files
• Board/alumni liaison – maintaining contact with the Board of Directors, Board of Advisors and JSPS/New Voices alum
• Collaborating with the editor on issue planning, editing, and recruitment In addition to these tasks, JSPS/New Voices staff is responsible for recruiting and managing interns who will assist with planning and running a series of educational programs in the New York area at local colleges and universities, as well as our annual conference for Jewish student journalists.

• A one-page cover letter explaining who you are, why you want the position, and why you think you’re the right person for the job. Specifically focus on how your skills will help you in the tasks of administrative duties, fundraising, and development.
• A resume and two writing samples, published or not Three one-paragraph feature article proposals
• A 1-2-page strategy of how to make New Voices more visible and relevant on campuses despite a relatively small budget. Begin by describing why you think New Voices is important in the American Jewish community.

• A one-page cover letter explaining who you are, why you want the position, why you think you’re the right person for the job, why New Voices is important in the American Jewish community, and how you would make it more visible on campuses
• A resume and two writing samples, published or not
• Three one-paragraph feature article proposals
• A 2-5-page critique of a couple issues of New Voices magazine: what you like and why; what you think could be improved, and how you would do so. Your critique should address content, quality, scope, and tone,as well as style, clarity, readability, and layout.
