For Lovers of Radical Jewish History

Jewish Currents magazine*, the 62 year old, (formerly Communist), now secular, progressive magazine, has recently started putting its archives up on the web. You can check it out here and find out what Israel and the Black Panthers have to do with each other. It’s a fascinating, ‘more things change, more things stay the same’ look at progressive Jewish history. Enjoy!
*As many of you know, I’m now a paid employee of Jewish Currents. I’d still think this was cool, even if they weren’t paying me to say that!

  1. Of course, William Kunstler and Jerry Rubin were not Zionists. Probably not Judge Hoffman, either. My guess is that whoever made that statement quoted in the letter IS an example of anti-Semitism, using “Zionists” as a codeword for “Jews” — this often happens among extremists who don’t want to be, ‘er, impolitic.
If I’m not mistaken, Itzhak Epstein wrote an article on the anti-Zionism, ‘er, anti-Semitism, of the Black Panther Party in one of the issues of the short-lived Jewish Liberation Journal, the organ of the Jewish Liberation Project, sometime in the late ’60s or early ’70s. It is reproduced in JEWISH RADICALISM, an anthology printed about 30 years back, by Grove Books, edited by Jack Nusan Porter and Peter Dreier, which is from time to time available at used bookshops, off and on-line.

  2. The interface works really poorly with my browser (Safari)– It’s next to impossible to scroll down a column or across to the next column in a controlled manner.
