Here’s one of particular interest:
Charles Thompson Winters – Miami
Offense: Conspiracy to export, and exportation, of a military aircraft to a foreign country
in violation of the Neutrality Act of 1939; 22 U.S.C. § 448(a).
Sentence: Feb. 4, 1949; Southern District of Florida; 18 months in prison, $5,000 fine.
Charles Winters was a businessman from Miami, who died in 1984, who happened to own two B-17 bombers. Al Schwimmer was a US born Army flight engineer who went to Palestine after the war to fight for the new Jewish State. Schwimmer bought Winters’ planes. The story is elaborated here. Ironically, the act that got Winters 18 mo. of prison time was to prevent US corporations and individuals from doing business with the Nazis. Something Prescott Bush (grandfather of W) made a pastime of, even after the law was passed.
t should also be noted that Al Schwimmer was pardoned by Bill Clinton, despite never applying for pardon.
