Purim Miracle?

From Above the Law, we have the case of a possible modern day Purim story. Speculation is flying as to why the law firm White & Case postponed layoffs until Wednesday of this week.

In temporarily abstaining from layoffs, White & Case not only celebrated the Purim story, but also reenacted it. White & Case built the gallows by sending out a memo announcing terminations, and then drew lots to see who would hang. Then, just as the associates were to perish, the firm wrought a latter-day Purim miracle and spared them their jobs …until Wednesday

I know, I know, it’s a stretch. But I enjoyed seeing this story. And props to the anonymous author of comment 35 for completing the story:

if White & Case is going to hew closely to this Purim reenactment, it pays to remember that in an ironic reversal Mordechai ended up hanging Haman from the gallows Haman himself built …
So 200 White & Case associates should start booking conference rooms and letting the firm’s managing committee know that they’ll be getting 3 months’ severance.

(I’d love to see more random economy crashing/Purim comparisons. Anyone?)

  1. Not only would the associates need to lay off the management committee to complete the story, they’d also need to go on a vengeful rampage and take away the jobs of 75,000 of the management committee’s kin. But of course not lay hand on the spoils.
