First Transgender Appointee – And She's Jewish Too!
We’ve reported on transgender Jewish news before. I don’t think it’s a surprise to any of you Jewschool readers that we’re all in favour of queer and transgender equality around here. And today’s news is just another step in the right direction.
Amanda Simpson, who, in addition to being a highly skilled rocket scientist (seriously) with over 
30 years of experience in the aerospace and defence industry, is both transgender and Jewish, was just appointed by POTUS Obama to the Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security as a senior technical advisor.
Yasher koach to her. I hope others in the transgender community continue to have their work and accomplishments recognised, instead of only being seen (too often in a negative light) for their gender.

We’re all transgender. None of us were born with our genders. They are a societal construct. The myth of two seperate and distinct sexes may be socially useful, but it is contrary to the genetic and/or anatomical realities. Eventually, there will come a day (probably not within my lifetime, but that is a short timescale in the span of history) where gender and sex are irrelevant and no longer spoken of. With artificial ova, sperm and uteri now available (albeit in early experimental stages) it is only a matter of time until the male-female dichotomy serves no purpose, and will be some day taken as seriously as the Four Humours or some other such thing. Testosterone and estrogen run through all our veins.
A little testosterone can go a long way towards making someone a good engineer.
