  1. What’s clear from the press about this non-event is that these marginal and marginalized Jews will continue to be the non-entities they always were. Not that all the voices at this conference were necessarily bad or stupid, but those with valid messages would do well for themselves not to associate with some of the more retarded elements at this conference – anyone who calls Israel an Apartheid State for instance, will forever be banished to the outer peripheries of the Jewish communal experience. What I got out of the articles was a lack of coherence. Well, I hope they had fun at theeir little self-important wank fest.

  2. I probably disagree with 90% of the Conference’s collective thoughts on Israel – but if they succeed in bringing disenfranchised or disillusioned Jews into “a” (rather than “the”) Jewish Commmunity, then props to them.
But nevertheless, they are seriously mistaken in setting up this false binary, where if you support Israel within the context of the mainstream Jewish community you can’t be critical of it, and if you criticize Israel in the non-mainstream Jewish community, you can’t support it.

um yup, they’re clearly the ones setting up the false binary.

  4. um yup, they’re clearly the ones setting up the false binary. You’re right about that, certainly.
Or, as they put it, it’s to see how the other half lives (okay, okay, so it’s more than half). Or “a parallel conference” to the GA. Or people who dissent from mainstream ideas. Or some of these people wouldn’t go near the GA.
    And so forth.

  5. Interesting account from Ynet of the GA: mpressively, they also gave time to opposing voices: On the first day, after community heads spelled out all their achievements, young Jews were invited to take the main stage to voice their criticisms: The Jewish establishment is disconnected from the younger generation, that the establishment is inflated and clumsy, that Jewish organizations spend most of their efforts raising money but are afraid of new or fresh steps.
Ironically, the conference responded to the criticism with healthy applause.
