The JTA reports,
An Israeli lawyer sued Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in Germany for Holocaust denial. Ervin Eran Shahar filed suit with the German Federal Prosecutors’ Office in Karlsruhe this week, asking them to press charges against Ahmadinejad for his repeated statements questioning the Nazi genocide of the Jews. Holocaust denial is a crime in Germany.
Shahar acknowledged that Ahmadinejad is not a German citizen and may enjoy diplomatic immunity as a head of state, but he argued that prosecution in absentia would send an important political message. The Federal Prosecutors’ Office had no immediate comment.
