Kol HaKavod L'Gili's Skateshop

Our friend Gili Levi, proprietor of Jerusalem’s only skateshop — the inventively named Gili’s Skateshop — has begun printing his own series of skateboard designs, starting with this tribute to the Israeli Defense Forces. The board is currently in-stock in Gili’s shop on R’ Shammai in Jerusalem, and will soon be available for purchase through Gili’s online store.
Why he chose the British spelling of defense is beyond me, but hey, it’s better than most of the spelling in this city…

  1. Why are we celebrating the IDF?!?!?*? – ‘Hip Jews’ celebrating nationalist army/warfare moteefs???
    hhhmmmm…. I’m like – That’s so last century! !
Is the IDF really something we Jews want to identify with promote and celebrate??

  2. I’ll buy one when they’re available on-line, and yes…the IDF is something we should absolutely support as Jews. Support doesn’t mean without criticism when required, however.
And he probably spelled ‘Defence’ the way he did simply because, well, that’s the correct way to spell it. And considering Israel was a Brisith mandate prior to independence, I’m not sure why one would assume that the incorrect American spelling would be used. Mate.

  3. “as tasteless as a US Army Of One skateboard. cachun ses goutes. ”
My Zaddie, born in Swalki, Poland, would’ve appreciated an IDF…hell any army, during ’41.
Some take shots at Asaf for being a deserter, chicken-shit, wimp, etc. Personally, I think the IDF is a safer, more respectable army w/o folks like him in service.

  4. “Is the IDF really something we Jews want to identify with promote and celebrate??”
I’m not so nostalgic to yearn for the days when naked, dead Jews were piled, mountain high, on top of each other. God Bless every man and woman who forsakes time and energy (limbs and possibly their lives) to devote themselves to securing Israel.

  5. how you managed to deduce “everything the IDF does is okay because of the Holocaust” from “i dont want to Holocuast to happen again, so good for people who want to fight for Israel” is beyond me Max. maybe its some sort of new logic i have not yet heard about.

  6. O Asaf, you adorable little bumpkin, frontin’ like you all cosmopolitan and shit. It’s “chacun à son goût” or even sometimes “à chacun son goût.” Please do not add to your sins the butchery of the French language.

  7. Danny,
Logic doesn’t really enter into it so far as I can tell. Max’s opinions, whilst he has a right to express them, repulse me no end. And I refuse to have a battle of wits with those that are unarmed, so I’ve placed Max firmly in the camp of folks I just won’t argue with because there is no point (population two, but I won’t flame the other name here given we’re supposed to adhere to responsible speech).
    Just my two shekels.

  8. Go ride your ‘IDF skate-board’ through the sky!
Danny – if you want to be a pedant – i don’t see either “quotation” you mention in any of these above comments!
What I’m saying is quite clear:
    1. I find celebrating the IDF very questionable and in fact slightly unsavoury – namely because the ‘IDF’ itself, and indulging in “nationalist army/warfare motifs” are both really NOT cool.
(Surely that’s something we might have learnt from WWII?)
    2. I am sickened to the depths of my being to think that the victims of the Holocaust are being used as the legitimization of the existence of ‘Israel’ and of the behaviour of the ‘IDF’.
    To quote:
“My Zaddie, born in Swalki, Poland, would’ve appreciated an IDF…hell any army, during ‘41 … I’m not so nostalgic to yearn for the days when naked, dead Jews were piled, mountain high, on top of each other. God Bless every man and woman who forsakes time and energy (limbs and possibly their lives) to devote themselves to securing Israel.” – striemel
    3. The irony in implying that the IDF is somehow in existence to STOP another Holocaust – when it is – in fact Israel and the IDF’s dishonourable actions that are likely to be the CAUSE of any (God Forbid) future anti-Semitic blood shed in the Diaspora!
Matit – Please don’t talk to me! for I am of the un-saved! – I am not able to discuss anything logically – nor am I open to seeing things differently – and understanding why you have your views – moreover, i’m really not openminded!
Let me just let you know a few things about me:
    1. I was born in Israel – I am an Israeli National
    2. I believe in the existence of Israel
    3. I don’t think that land for peace is a good idea
    4. I don’t agree with talking to terrorists
    5. I am a proud Jew
    6. I believe I am Torah observant
    7. I belive that there are much cooler skateboard designs that I as a Jew would rather have on my board.
Lo! Matit… I only wish you the biggest blessing/curse there is: “may you have a very long life!”
    Peace*
