More Happening Happenings

August 21-28 brings ’round the annual Howl! Festival of East Village Arts. Billed as “Eight days of countercultural euphoria,” the festival will play host to a variety of Jewpendous™ (take that Jewlicious and Jewcy!) events including a matzocentric art exhibition at the Streit’s factory, a Jewish edition of The Big Quiz Thing, a Lower East Side synagogue walking tour, the annual Allen Ginsberg Poetry Festival, as well as performances by Jennifer Blowdreyer, Jonathan Ames, Kosher ChiXXX, Shalom Asch and (yeeee!) Lou Reed. The “Jewbilation” (their term, not mine) kicks off August 22 with a party sponsored by Heeb and the 14th Street Y.
On August 25, ABC No Rio will be hosting a fundraiser for “Against The Wall,” an international art exhibition featuring works by Israeli, Palestinian and New York artists which respond to Israel’s separation barrier. For this evening, artists Seth Tobocman, Eric Blitz, Steve Wishnia and Meirav Shaul (of Dimona Comix) will present their work.
September 10, JDub Records is hosting a benefit concert at the JCC on the Palisades in Tenafly, NJ, starring Matisyahu. Move quick! Order your tickets here.
I’m terribly envious of anyone in New York City September 13-25 who is able to attend The New York Jewish Music & Heritage Festival. The two week mega-event features performances from Dave Brubeck, The Klezmatics, Marc Ribot, Pharoah’s Daughter, Michal Cohen, Sarah Aroeste, The Klezmer Mountain Boys, DJ Handler, Juez, So Called, Divahn, Golem, Oi Va Voi, Balkan Beat Box, Jill Sobule, Avishai Cohen, Joshua Nelson, Blue Fringe, Soul Farm and Aviv Geffen. In addition, Heeb will be presenting their first annual Jewish Music Awards, The Folksbiene will be presenting a Yiddish performance of Gilbert & Sullivan’s “Pirates of Penzance,” beloved Kabbalistic artist David Friedman will be in from Tzefat along with a merry band of klezmers, and The Workmen’s Circle is hosting Yiddishfest, featuring Fyvush Finkel and David Krakauer. It looks like an amazing lineup, so don’t miss out if you don’t have to. Order tickets here.
