Robert Anton Wilson, z"tl
Old Bob — sage, spirit, and holy man; author of Illuminatus!, Cosmic Trigger, and countless other influential tomes; progenitor of Discordianism and the Church of the Subgenius; hero, icon and role model — died last night, within days of his 75th birthday.
On January 6, Bob wrote:
Various medical authorities swarm in and out of here predicting I have between two days and two months to live. I think they are guessing. I remain cheerful and unimpressed. I look forward without dogmatic optimism but without dread. I love you all and I deeply implore you to keep the lasagna flying.
Please pardon my levity, I don’t see how to take death seriously. It seems absurd.
Bob has been among my greatest influences and I have often said that my goal in life was to become “The Jewish Robert Anton Wilson.” He led life by example, and one to which we should all aspire.
On December 11, Bob wrote:
Wavy Gravy once asked a Zen Roshi, “What happens after death?”
The Roshi replied, “I don’t know.”
Wavy protested, “But you’re a Zen Master!”
“Yes,” the Roshi admitted, “but I’m not a dead Zen Master.”
He will be sorely missed.
The illuminatus trilogy should be read by anyone who values truth at all, and is mamish on level of anything written by james joyce or moshe rabbeinu.
I’m comforted at the thought that RAW is part of the God head now. May his clarity illuminate the whole world.
My dad gave me RAW books to read as an adolescent, and I’ve always felt like it was part of my Jewish education in a funny way… so I really appreciate this posting!
i’ve read a whole bunch of books in my life, and i’m pretty sure that RAW is the most important writer/thinker of the twentieth century.
My feeble contribution to the RAW distortion in the reality field with 23 more “23’s” in a tribute here.
