Subterranean Homesick… Dancehall!
Friends, I’m a Reggae Jew. So about two years ago when Awake Zion (documentary on Judaism & Reggae) came out, that was crucial. And Mattis started playing about the same time. Bless. Was an auspicious year. A friend just pointed me to a tribute CD of Bob Dylan covers reggae-style. It really works! This might sound like k’fira to some, but I actually like these covers better than the originals. One of the best reggae collections I’ve heard in a while, lots of stars on it, etc. There’s a great video about making of the film on their site. Our Jamaican brothers got themselves a new Bob. Irie!

Is the early Wailers’ version of “Like a Rolling Stone” on there? I love that version. Jump up. Spread out.
No, “Like a Rolling Stone” is not on there, these are all brand new covers. A bunch of contemporary Jamaican stars holed up in the studio and recorded. But there’re a lot of old Wailers-style rootsy tunes on there.
wow, that’s cool. Is it available in regular music stores?
jake— yasher koach..much strength. You have made my day, sincerely. Two of my favorites… its like, I don’t know I’ll have to hear the cd. May this be a sign that Shalom is coming before Shabbat.
The bonus CD of the dub versions is even better.
Jake-

In the case of Dylan, liking the covers more is not only tolerated but encouraged (even by the man himself). That the songs hold up well translated into a different style shows the quality of the songwriting.
