  1. easy there epshap–“me” aka “jail jesse” is going to dismiss gafni as a womanizing cult leader the second he/she reads this. because, oh my god, in an interview once, he said he loves women! stop the presses! call the child endangerment agency! somebody stop this man!

  2. Actually, I suggest you do some research. Maybe speak to Gary Rosenblatt at The Jewish Week.
Rabbi Mordechai Gafni’s original name is Marc Winiarz. He changed it due to problems aluded to in:

    a womanizing rabbi has changed his name and moved to Israel, I was told;

  3. ya know, there’s a HUGE difference between being a womanizer and being a sex offender. that’s number one. number two–that’s pretty fuckin’ circumstantial evidence–one sentence about an unnamed character from a jewish week article, and one sentence about a rabbi who loves women in a haaretz story. how many people change their name when they move to israel? ooooh so many. god, everything’s a salem witch hunt with you.

  5. >ya know, there’s a HUGE difference between being
    >a womanizer and being a sex offender.
In some states sexual exploitation as a result of clergy counselling activities is now a crime and that would make you a sex offender (this is not a specific statement to the Gafni case, just a response to your statement).
    >–that’s pretty fuckin’ circumstantial evidence
    >–one sentence about an unnamed character from
    >a jewish week article, and one sentence about a
    >rabbi who loves women in a haaretz story.
    >how many people change their name when they move

I’m not going to discuss non-public information here, but I only referenced the Jewish Week article to give you a starting point for inquiries.
Obviously, you don’t need to have facts or make inquiries to dismiss me.
Fine, attack me without being informed.

  6. you can’t run around slandering people on heresay and otherwise circumstantial evidence; it’s against the law

  7. “sexual exploitation as a result of clergy counselling activities” — that’s not womanizing. there’s a big difference there. womanizing is being a flirt; maybe even a pig. but it doesn’t suggest that he groped, fondled, or otherwise assaulted any of his congregants, nor used his position of ‘power’ to seduce or otherwise force himself upon women. another question–is he married?

  8. >you can’t run around slandering people on heresay
    >and otherwise circumstantial evidence
First it’s libel not slander (but slander doesn’t apply, see below).
slander definition – Slander is a defamatory statement expressed in a transitory medium such as verbal speech.
libel – a tort consisting of false and malicious publication printed for the purpose of defaming a living person
    Second I haven’t defamed Gafni.
defame – charge falsely or with malicious intent; attack the good name and reputation of someone; “The journalists have defamed me!” “The article in the paper sullied my reputation”
    Because it’s true.
    >it’s against the law
False, as long as it’s true, truth is a complete defense.
You make poor arguments. Try some research, maybe read a book about law (not The Firm, also don’t watch the Practice) before trying to utilize it.

  9. >”sexual exploitation as a result of clergy
    >counselling activities” — that’s not womanizing.
    >there’s a big difference there.
In the past both were not crimes. Today some states are making sexual exploitation as a result of clergy
    counselling activities a crime.
    >womanizing is being a flirt; maybe even a pig. but it
    >doesn’t suggest that he groped, fondled, or otherwise
    >assaulted any of his congregants, nor used his position
    >of ‘power’ to seduce or otherwise force himself upon
    >women.
Get a clue. Why do you think he changed his name, went to Israel and has for the past years oscillated between various Jewish denominations?
    >another question–is he married?
Last I heard, he’s married to Chaya Kaplan
I’m not discussing any confidential non-public information here, that’s for his victims to do. My only obligation is to provide a starting point for any inquiries people want to make so that your promotion of him doen’t put innocent potential victims in his hands.

  10. This would be a good time for all the women hurt by him to come forward and talk to the press. Just like the Lanner case needed the Press to get involved to stop him, this case needs public exposure. Nothing can stick to his reputation without evidence. Rabbi Blau and Rav A. Lichtenstein already know about him.
He was “allegedly” involved in adultery, wife-beating, and clergy seduction. He also used to be “engaged” to marry several women at the same time who then would do anything he asked.
Please. Please, use this as a chance to come forward and stop him.

  11. Wait, now I read the FA. (at least the beginning.) This is pretty much Dan Brown’s interpretation of Judaism in the DaVinci Code. Apparently a popular idea. Wonder where it originated.

  12. >This would be a good time for all the women hurt by him to come forward
    >and talk to the press. Just like the Lanner case needed the Press to get
    >involved to stop him, this case needs public exposure.
100%. It is essential that victims of any abuse speak out. You are likely not alone. Your voices need to be heard and your abusers need to be stopped. Speak out to everyone until someone listens and acts. This is the only way to protect the innocent and vulnerable in our community. Talk to the press [email protected] , talk to Rabbi Blau [email protected] , email the Awareness Center [email protected] , contact the relevant rabbinical organizations, police, social services etc.
If the first people you contact don’t listen, keep trying!
By the way, you mentioned the Lanner case. There is breaking news with regard to that case. I was told that Rabbi Baruch Lanner was admitted to the hospital and is recovering from a heart attack.

  13. “Get a clue. Why do you think he changed his name, went to Israel and has for the past years oscillated between various Jewish denominations?”
my only point is, you can’t just say it–you have to prove it. otherwise it’s libel.

  14. also, this, in a discussion forum, by my standards, is slander. posting to the homepage is libel. also, i don’t consider epshap posting that story to be promotion. you get from it what you want. is objective–there’s no opinion stating whether its a good or bad thing.

  15. >my only point is, you can’t just say it–you have to prove it.
    >otherwise it’s libel.
Finally, the right term! Yosher Koach!
But you’re wrong again, the truth is a complete defense to the charge of libel. Using legal term to claim I’ve defamed someone is probably libel, you don’t have the defense of truth, just ignorance.
    >also, this, in a discussion forum, by my standards, is slander.
    >posting to the homepage is libel. also, i don’t consider epshap
    >posting that story to be promotion. you get from it what you want.
Check the internet search engines and archives. Permanent record, libel not slander.
I consider posting the article/linking the article promotion as someone may read it not knowing Gafni’s backgroud and get involved with him.
    >is objective–there’s no opinion stating whether its a good or bad thing.
    Now there is.

  16. It’s time to break the silence. It’s time for people to stand and be counted.
    My challenge:
Stop your lousy slander/libel arguments. Prove me right or prove me wrong.

  17. >my mission in life isn’t to go after sex offenders,
    >tho apparently it is yours
Actually, my mission (and yours) is simply to do the right thing. Zedek Zedek Tirdof…

  18. >my mission in life isn’t to go after sex offenders, tho apparently it is yours
I’m curious though, would that be as bad as someone trying to cure cancer???

  19. Has anyone gone to this site? I heard they are updating it daily. It’s important for people to talk about these things in a public forum. It’s the only way anything will ever change.

  20. Sex offenders
    * On a given day in 1994 there were approximately 234,000 offenders convicted of rape or sexual assault under the care, custody, or control of corrections agencies; nearly 60% of these sex offenders are under conditional supervision in the community.
    * The median age of the victims of imprisoned sexual assaulters was less than 13 years old; the median age of rape victims was about 22 years.
    * An estimated 24% of those serving time for rape and 19% of those serving time for sexual assault had been on probation or parole at the time of the offense for which they were in State prison in 1991.
    Child victimizers
    * Offenders who had victimized a child were on average 5 years older than the violent offenders who had committed their crimes against adults. Nearly 25% of child victimizers were age 40 or older, but about 10% of the inmates with adult victims fell in that age range.

  21. I’m not shocked and I am shocked. I knew Gafni as Mordechai Winiarz and knew him when he was married to his first wife. I remember when something happened and was very close to his in-laws at the time. I know they were devastated. I also happened to know Rabbi Lanner personally.
All I will say is that seeing pictures of him as he is posted is very unsettling. I knew his as apparently a different — and the same — person. Perhaps that says a lot perhaps it doesn’t. Regardless, events like this are unsettling.
