Gaza blockade easing, boycotts, and a takeover of the WZO
Things just move too fast in the Middle East to keep up these days.
- Netanyahu orders the “civilian blockade” lessened and maintains the “security blockade” ongoing — as if he had thought they were two separate things all along.
- Haaretz catches Im Tirtzu spokesman Ronen Shuval ignorant of his own sloganeering — in a pamphlet calling for a renewal of Herzl’s vision which has no resemblance to Herzl’s vision at all.
- Left-wing Jews in NYC held a debate for and against boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) and the whole thing is on YouTube. Voices against feature JJ Goldberg and Kathleen Peratis; those in favor feature Hannah Mermelstein and Yonatan Shapiro.
- The “We Con the World” video was taken down by YouTube for copyright violations, which in turn was challenged by the Association for Civil Rights in Israel (in delicious irony).
- …But Caroline Glick, producer of the noxious video, produced an anti-Turkish sequel, which AIPAC felt it necessary to send to all their press contacts.
- American Jewish Committee’s David Harris wrote an op-ed in the International Herald Tribute — but what the eff is it saying other than how he can’t stop thinking about the Holocaust? This explains so much.
- Israeli leaders are calling the Palestinian Authority boycott of settlement goods “economic terrorism”, which is just too painful a hyperbole to treat seriously. Not buying settlement fruit = wholesale slaughter of innocents? Nu-uh. No dice.
- Oh, and the most amazing of all, J Street staffer Hadar Susskind took over the World Zionist Congress sub-committee on settlement activity and passed an anti-settlement resolution by 3 to 1! And the right is pissed, saying “Even Arafat never pulled off such an audacious hijacking.”
And in commentary, Gershom Gorenberg says despite American Jews’ dissonance on Israel’s illiberalism, there are now new venues for the expression of your values. “Don’t give up. Get involved.”
I looked for reporting, blogs, official press releases about the WZO stuff. Looked at their websites in English/Hebrew, etc.
The very Zionist groups most involved in WZO are maintaining radio silence on the whole event. Is this odd or normal?
Was there an election for this year’s World Zionist Congress? Did I miss it?
The larger Zionist orgs rammed through a “stand still” order prohibiting elections this year. They knew they would lose a huge amount of seats. (Ron Skolnick of Meretz USA did us the kindness of allowing us to repost his report on their chicanery back in January.)
P.S. Nobody is talking about the WZO committee takeover or the passage of the anti-settlement resolution! It’s not really registered except on JTA.
