Jews Say Beat The Meat!
A lil kashrut news on the veggie/eco-kosher tip:
- Aaron Gross of UC Santa Barbara’s Department of Religious Studies writes, “A new statement calling for AgriProcessors to make specific changes and for kosher certification agencies to set-up basic humane standards has been issued by a diverse group of Jewish leaders including the President and Executive Director of the Central Conference of American Rabbis (CCAR), the Dean of the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies (LA), the Rector of the University of Judaism (LA), and the Dean of the Rabbinical School of Hebrew College (Boston). The statement and the current list of more than 30 rabbinic signatories [can be found at humanekosher.com.]”
- “Israel will ban the force-feeding of geese as of late January after parliamentary approval of a new law under heavy pressure from animal rights campaigners. […] The law was passed on Monday despite government fears that it could ruin Israel’s standing as one of the world’s largest exporters of foie gras, a pate made from goose liver.”
- Rabbi Michael Skobac of Jews For Judaism argues on behalf of Jewish vegetarianism.
Then uh, just to balance things out, here’s a Jewish argument in favor of eating meat.
