Most likely: it’s not true, and it’s silly, and it’s of a piece with the untrue silly garbage Pollardites cannot help excreting with every breath. “The United States should thank Pollard for raping it sideways, and pay him a nice honorarium, and apologize, etc..”
Less likely but possible:
1: it’s semi-true and is so because of American intelligence service rage over Israel’s special status and things nobody outside certain circles knows about: Pollard is being held up as a scapegoat and examplary case of the peculiar USrael marriage.
2: it’s semi-true, but specific to the prison situation, because people go in not liking Pollard and then find him to be a difficult asshole. As a prison guard in America or Israel, where torture is perfectly legal in the right context, you have a certain free reign, and it is impossible to imagine Jonathan the Righteous keeping his mouth shut.
3: it’s true, and directly a result of intelligence arrogance issues. Pollard wounded their pride and that, more than any piddling loss of thousands of lives some September, is what American spies really can never get over.
I think its cute that this will probably become another case of an ideology colouring people’s perceptions and reactions on certain matters. For instance, in this issue certain people on the right of the ideological spectrum would complain and desire to have certain people held accountable for the maltreatment of Pollard. On the other hand certain people on the left of the ideological spectrum will deny or dismiss it out of hand.
Now consider the treatment of, if you guys can remember, people at Gitmo who suffer similar “interrogation methods.” In this instance, certain people on the left wanted prison guards and politicians held accountable, while certain people on the right denied or dismissed it out of hand.
Quite similar cases, both perpetrated by the US government, different reactions. Ideology is a funny thing, n’est pas?
Axl is absolutely full of day-old blintzes in saying that a known crime committed against innocent civilians is comparable to an extraordinary claim from a decency-incapable convicted scumbag. Everyone knows institutionalized torture is real and regular, while few can admit it, and most people have seen the pictures. We have every reason to believe in one and little reason to believe in the other. I never said anything about proven vs. claimed, all I said was that this issue would likely be perceived differently by people of different ideologies, which to me is interesting. Personally, I believe all cases of abuse against prisoners should be investigated. Even hardened murderers are afforded that right, at least.
Interesting point about proven claims and suspected claims, however how does a proven claim become proven if not through thorough investigation, my friend? Gitmo and Abu Gharib would both be “suspected” were it not for investigative journalists and some lucky breaks, no?
As a side note, as a Canadian outside much of this broohaha, I personally see some similarity that you perhaps do not, being removed from feelings of responsibility and/or guilt over either matter. To me, both cases involve people who were convicted under suspect trials (the military tribunals at gitmo and the rather…interesting… .case of Pollard), both involve people suspected and convicted of endangering US National Security. Both cases exposed the weakness of the federal intelligence agencies, both involve the raised ire of federal agents, and both cases involve suspected abuses that need to be investigated.
Now you can say that the people in Gitmo are innocent civilians, but others would say they are terrorists, spys and terrorist supporters who “deserve whatever they get.” Similarly, some (like those above me) state that Pollard was an innocent stooge, whereas you and many others state that he is a convicted spy and should remain in custody. Ideology is what is colouring people’s perceptions in both cases. As is the case with most things, the truth is probably somewhere in the middle. That is what interested me, and is what I think people should pay more attention to before becoming so easily aroused by news stories.
