Sukkos in the City
And what city is there, if not New York? (j/k, my good yidden — I just moved here last week; I figure I’ve got a good solid month of pretending to be a snotty New Yorker before I relapse into my Philadelphia-ness.) PresenTense, He’Brew, and (this is my favorite) Sabra Salads are presenting this party at the beautiful, venerable Sixth Street Shul. See below for details. Or just run into me on the subway and follow me.
The beautiful Community Synagogue, located on 6th st btwn 1st and 2nd ave, dates back to the 19th century but has actually only been a shul for 50/60 years. It previously belonged to the St. Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, many of whose congregants were killed in the General Slocum disaster of 1891, leading to the dissolution of the congregation. It is currently run under the dynamic leadership of Rabbi Charlie Buckholz, who is really just awesome.
For a really venerable, gorgeous Lower East Side Shul, make sure you walk to Community takes you past (and perhaps inside to look or to daven) the Mezritcher Shul on the north side of 6th st, btwn Ave A and 1st Ave. It’s only a block away, and it’s one of the few remaining functioning Lower East Side tenement shuls out of dozens built near the turn of the 20th century. (If you enjoy Mezritch, you should come by the Stanton St. Shul as well, a very hospitable, open-Orthodox tenement shul on Stanton St. between Clinton and Attorney. Or look it over online at Stantonstreetshul.com)
Seems the poster should show a full moon instead of a crescent.

Just FYI, neither location is on the Lower East Side. They are located in the East Village, on the edge of Alphabet City. The Lower East Side is, well, lower.
