Jews Irked By Cross on RNC Podium

Reuters reports,

Speakers at this week’s Republican convention make their remarks at a wooden podium that some Jewish groups find offensive because its decorative panels appear to form the shape of a Christian cross.

A cross is even more visible in a waist-high gavel stand adjacent to the podium, leading some to question whether the party is trying to send a subtle message to its base among conservative Christians.

Meh. Same old shit. Don’t forget, the GOP also declared Texas a Christian state back in June. Lest we also forget, of course, “The Jesus Landing Pad.” Not that I’m looking to bash American Christian conservatives generally, but, frankly, I don’t think Jews are really welcome in the GOP—just their votes and their dollars. At the end of the day, their motivations are laid bare: They just want us all to move to Israel so Jesus can come back and kill us.

I mean, really, we’ve only been allowed in their country clubs for how long now? Hell, we’re still not welcome in some of the most prominent communities, where GOP membership tends to thrive among the wealthy WASPy elite. But hey, Bush is The Best Friend Israel Ever Had™ right? And that’s all that matters, right, even if we are being used?

But, oh the irony of seeing Esther Jungreis preach from a Christian pulpit… I can hardly contain my amusement.

  1. Actually it was during Bush’s speech that it was clear as day – that direclty behind him was a big white cross – the grid paneling of the screens behind him had him positions in such a way that one his left – screen right was a big white cross flanking him for his entire speech.

  2. for those leftists who infest this board, may i suggest a shortcut: your arguments always devolve to bush is a right wing christian moron who is evil and got us into an unnecessary war and is trying to destroy poor people. why not just start out every posting with an abreviation of that (perhaps bushmorhatkillpoor); then, if surprisingly, you have a new argument to make, you can set it forth. think of the ecological benefit to the saving of cyberspace if you follow this advice.

Gosh. As an American Christian conservative who pretty much always votes GOP *and* supports Jews whether they’re in Israel or not — well, that stings.
Frankly, if anyone in the GOP doesn’t like Jews and supporting them in their party, I think they’re going to say so. And a great many do.
Perhaps the key to not trusting American Christian conservative support is that it is contrary to human nature. There is nothing the Jews can really do for us in any direct way. And there’s very little that they would want to do for us, anyway. And offering vocal support for Israel, for example, often gets us more trouble than it is worth.
(Of course, I recognize that individuals might not agree with the *way* American conservative Christians give support, which usually most obviously translates into support for the Jews in Israel and a lack of support for Palestinians.)
Maybe GOP fundraisers are eyeing your wallets. OK. That’s what they’re paid to do. Give or don’t give. Vote GOP or don’t vote GOP. I’m sure they’re been eyeing some wealthy Christian wallets too. And it’s not like the Christian vote hasn’t felt used in the past either.
But please don’t underestimate the genuine affection of many (sadly not all) American conservative Christians despite the fact that it totally goes against common sense.
